Example 1

Regulatory Application

Purpose: a third-party application that supports a regulatory process where managers are required by law to supervise certain activities.

Techniques Utilized

  • Card Sorting
  • User interface design
  • Usability testing

Goal

  • 80% successful completion of process without assistance

High-Level Findings

Initial usability testing was conducted on a tool the firm had already purchased. Only 16.5% of managers were able to successfully complete their supervision activity. Some configuration changes raised the success rate to 42%.

A card sorting exercise was conducted to better understand how the users thought about their work. Based on the results of the exercise, updated user interfaces were created – designs worked within the third-party application technology constraints.

A third round of usability testing showed that success rate had increased to 67%. One final round of design changes were made and then tested with an 87% success rate.

Outcome

Management was very pleased with the proposed solution. It salvaged the significant investment that had already been made in the third-party tool and saved the cost and time of developing a solution from scratch - the total of the which were estimated at over a million.
